7. If you are available to intern for at least 7 months of the growing season, are you also interested in getting formal learning by participating in the Kansas City Growing Growers program (referenced in our general internship section)?
8.The following are expectations we have of interns, please indicate if you can agree to make a good faith effort to comply with these norms. If there are particular points which you would like to further discuss, please note them below so that we can address them together during a phone interview.
Interns are expected to conduct themselves with high integrity and respect for the land, the people, the neighbors, the animals and the physical resources at Sandhill Farm.
As a farm, we run on a day schedule. We expect interns to begin their work day by 9 am and put in 30-36 hours per week.
Interns take part in cooking for the community and doing regular housekeeping chores.
Interns are expected to attend both community meetings
(2-4x per month) and garden meetings (1x per week).
Community meetings include both business agenda and
personal sharing. At garden meetings, interns will be
mentored to take their turn in facilitating the meetings.
We expect interns to be able to take on responsibility for specific crops and specific projects with guidance from the garden managers or other Sandhill members or interns.
Interns are expected to bring their own tent, bedding and
tarp for camping outdoors in both dry and rainy weather.
9. How do you feel about having gardening and food processing as a major focus of your day? Are you able to work reliably in hot and humid, summer weather?
10. Are you interested in learning to make tempeh and potentially splitting your work focus between gardening/food processing and tempeh production?
11. Are you skilled at maintenance and/or tractor work and would you be interested in potentially splitting your work focus between gardening/food processing and maintenance/field work?
12. Please tell us something about your recreational interests (hobbies, passions, pastimes, etc.). Feel free to include any artwork, poetry, etc.
13. Do you have any allergies, food restrictions or physical limitations that might affect your ability to live in a rural setting and do farm, construction or kitchen work?
14. Do you have a history of alcohol or substance overuse? If yes, please share your history and let us know your current usage patterns.
15. At Sandhill Farm, we cultivate a rural, "alternative" culture. We want to make sure that you are aware of some elements of this culture, before deciding to come live here with us. While you would not be expected to believe in or actively partake in all that goes on, you should be aware that these are things commonly encountered here.
